I want to buy a wireless modem and hook it up myself for my laptop can I?

I just got internet but not a wireless modem. we only have one desk top and a laptop. My Ques: I want to know if i can buy a wireless modem, hook it myself without calling my cable company and use my laptop wifi? I just dont want them to charge me an arm and a leg for something i might be able to do myself....
