How to explain to my kids what an Atheist is without demonizing them?

My kids are 8 and 12. They smart enough to make decisions on their own, but I don't want them to get lost in a hopeless attitude. How do I keep my kids from becoming cynical without demonizing Atheists? I believe if I demonize them that it won't stick later in life. Ideas?
